On World Teachers’ Day, let’s remember that no real learning, growing, or thriving happens without the relationships teachers build with their students.

It’s these connections that have the most influence on student’s confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging. All of which are crucial for both academic success and positive mental health and wellbeing.

Teachers are spending their time developing relationships with so many students, every single day, all while juggling lesson plans, assessments, and all the other competing demands of a busy school environment.

We need to remember that they’re human too, carrying their own personal lives outside the classroom. Yet, despite it all, they show up, building relationships that shape futures. These connections are at the very heart of teaching.

Today, we express our deep gratitude for every teacher who gives their best, day in and day out.

Please know that you are valued, respected and appreciated.

Talking about mental health with young people WILL

Talking about mental health with young people WILL NOT cause problems, it will help solve them.

As adults we set the tone. When we initiate these conversations, we show young people that it’s okay to talk about their feelings, and this can actually reduce their sense of isolation. Avoiding the topic only reinforces shame and stigma.

Instead of worrying about saying the wrong thing, focus on being a compassionate listener. Your willingness to have these conversations could be the key to helping a young person feel seen, supported, and empowered to seek help.

The more we talk openly about mental health we move closer to creating a culture where mental health is as normal to talk about as physical health.

The more we normalise it, the more we equip young people with the strength and confidence to navigate life’s challenges.

Today is World Mental Health Day, an opportunity to reflect on how we can put the pieces of the puzzle together by connecting with young people.

Meaningful connections are essential to mental health, no matter the environment, whether at school, at home, or in the community.

When young people look back on their lives, it’s often the relationships they had with caring adults that stand out the most. Those moments of feeling seen, understood, and supported by someone. These relationships form the foundation of their emotional resilience and self worth. These connections are what help young people navigate the inevitable challenges of life.

Research consistently shows that strong relationships with trusted adults are key protective factors for mental health. When young people feel connected to someone who genuinely cares, they’re more likely to ask for help, engage meaningfully with the world around them, and manage stress.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s commit to deepening these connections with the young people in our lives, so they have the support and encouragement they need to thrive, both now and in the future.

It is true isn’t it, that not many people have a problem talking openly about their physical health issues 🤕 and it shouldn’t be any different when they are struggling with their mental health 🤯 But let’s be real, it is.

Often people don’t know what to say and they worry about what other people will think of them if they do say something. The stigma and shame is still very real and it is preventing people from getting the help they need.

So let’s start changing the narrative by sharing more, learning more and talking more about mental health.

Here are 5 truths that don’t get talked about enough but need to be.

Mental health isn’t just about statistics; it’

Mental health isn’t just about statistics; it’s personal for me and for all of us.

We’ve all seen its impact and felt the weight of concern for the future for our kids and teens.

Mental health illness is the number one barrier preventing young people from reaching their fullest potential. With over 20 years in education, I’ve witnessed the heartbreak of parents, the frustration of educators, and the helplessness of students.

When mental health challenges derail them, finding their way back can be incredibly tough. I’ve seen these real-life consequences too often and have served as a beacon of hope when all seemed lost.

We can all do more to set our young people up on the road to a thriving future. With the right skills and support, we can help them navigate their challenges and thrive despite them.

This October, during Mental Health Month, I’m committing to two important initiatives:

1. Facilitating the Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Course:

This course equips parents, educators, and community members to recognise early signs of mental health challenges in young people. It builds confidence in approaching and supporting youth in seeking help, addressing the urgent need for early intervention.

2. Walking 100 kilometres for One Foot Forward:
One Foot Forward, a national movement by the Black Dog Institute, raises awareness and funds for mental health services, showing solidarity with the 1 in 5 Australians who experience mental illness each year. Throughout October, I’ll walk 100 kilometres, reflecting on those impacted by mental health illness. Each kilometre represents a step toward changing the conversation and reducing stigma.
